Top 5 Aces on the PGA Tour 2017

There were 31 holes-in-one on the PGA Tour during the 2016-17 season, and many of them were memorable. Jon Rahm got things going at the Safeway Open at the end of 2016, and eight aces in all were made before the end of the 2016 calendar year.

But all five of the best ones, according to the video above, came during 2017. From Robert Flores at the Wyndham Championship to Justin Thomas at the WGC-Mexico Championship, all of them were fantastic. However, one stands alone: Sergio Garcia’s at the par-3 17th at TPC Sawgrass during the Players Championship.

It was the second year in a row an ace was made at the famous hole after a 14-year drought.

“I hit a good shot, but it can go there, it can go three yards past,” Garcia said. “I don’t know, it can do anything. It was nice to see it bounce and kind of spin back into the hole. Obviously it was a hole-in-one, so if [the crowd doesn’t] react to that, then something’s wrong. The reaction was great.”

The entire moment was one to remember.

Tiger begins latest comeback with 3-under 69 at Hero

Tiger Woods made his latest return to golf Thursday, shooting a solid 3-under 69 in the first round of the Hero World Challenge. It was his first competitive round in 301 days — and by most accounts, it was a successful first step in his comeback.

“For me, I thought I did great,” Woods said after his round that included five birdies and left him tied for eighth, three shots off the lead held by Tommy Fleetwood. “To come out here and score like I did, it was nice.”

Tiger Woods hole by hole

1 (par 4): Drive to fairway. Chip to 14 feet. Misses birdie putt on left side. Result: par.

2 (par 3): Hits green with tee shot. Birdie putt from 20 feet misses to the left. Result: par.

3 (par 5): Drive to fairway. 2-iron from 260 yards finds the green. Eagle putt from 50 feet comes up short. Tap-in for first birdie of the round. Result: birdie; moves to 1 under.

4 (par 4): Drive finds light rough near fairway bunker on right side. Pitching wedge from 157 yards misses green to the right. Chip short, finishes in fringe. Saves par with a putt from off the green, followed by a vintage fist pump. Result: par.

5 (par 3): Tee shot on 169-yard hole flares to the right but stays on green near fringe far from pin. Aggressive putt rolls 4 feet past, but he makes comebacker. Result: par.

6 (par 5): Driver into the wind misses the fairway right and finds the native area. Second shot lands in fairway, 93 yards short of pin. Wedge shot lands past pin, spins back near left fringe. Birdie putt clips right edge of cup. Result: par.

7 (par-4): Driver to 340-yard hole finds bottom of bunker near green. Poor bunker shot from a good lie finishes well past pin near fringe. Birdie putt misses right. Result: par.

8 (par 3): Tee shot with 4 iron finds green near fringe. Makes first long birdie putt (approx. 23 feet). Result: birdie, moves to 2 under.

9 (par 5): Tee shot splits fairway. 3-wood from 282 yards hits green but feeds off into the rough. Chunked chip comes up short of green. Opts for putter on birdie putt and rolls it 12 feet past. Par-saver misses to left. Result: bogey, falls to 1 under.

10 (par 4): 3-wood off tee finds fairway. Knockdown 7-iron to green. Makes 15-footer for bounce-back birdie. Result: birdie, moves to 2 under.

11 (par 5): Splits fairway with drive. Second shot misses green to right; one of his few misses with a full swing. Chip finishes near far side of green. Not happy with long par putt, but makes 7-foot comebacker to save par. Result: par.

12 (par 3): Not happy with tee shot that sails wide right into rough. Pounds club into ground. Solid chip leads to 5-foot par putt. Result: par.

13 (par 4): Tee shot finds rough down left side. Approach from 113 yards lands near middle of green. Rolls in birdie putt from 22 feet. Result: birdie, moves to 3 under.

14 (par 4): Opted for safe play to fairway on short par-4. Good decision, as he sticks approach from 88 yards to tap-in range. Result: birdie, moves to 4 under.

15 (par 5): First poor swing with driver all day, as tee shot sails right into the native bushes. Hits provisional that finishes in fairway but manages to find his initial shot. Takes a penalty and hits third shot that finishes behind dune near green. Approach lands near edge of green. Two putts for bogey. Result: bogey, falls to 3 under.

16 (par 4): Drive to native area down right side. Terrific approach that finds back of green and spins back to 15 feet. Birdie putt misses right. Result: par.

17 (par 3): Tee shot comes up just short of green. Delicate chip leaves tap-in par. Result: par.

18 (par 4): Finds fairway. Approach hits greens but bounces off to left. Made 8-footer to save par. Result: par and a score of 3-under 69.

Bryson DeChambeau working on his game at Dragonfly

We are proud to have Bryson along with so many other avid golfers working on their game here at Dragonfly!  Here are a few recent pics:

More about Bryson and his Career so far:

Amateur career

Born in Modesto, California to John Howard Aldrich DeChambeau and Janet Louise Druffel, DeChambeau moved to Clovis, northeast of Fresno, at age seven. He attended Clovis East High School and won the California State Junior Championship at age 16 in 2010. DeChambeau graduated in 2012 and accepted a scholarship to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, majoring in physics.

In June 2015, he became the first SMU Mustang to win the NCAA individual championship, recording a score of 280 (−8) to win by one stroke. In August, he won the U.S. Amateur title, defeating Derek Bard 7 & 6 in the 36-hole final. He became the fifth to win both the NCAA and U.S. Amateur titles in the same year, joining Jack Nicklaus (1961), Phil Mickelson (1990), Tiger Woods (1996), and Ryan Moore (2004).

DeChambeau made his PGA Tour debut as an amateur in June 2015 at the FedEx St. Jude Classic near Memphis, Tennessee, and finished in 45th place. He played in his first major championship at the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, but missed the cut by four strokes. DeChambeau was unable to defend his NCAA title in 2016 after the SMU athletic department was handed a postseason ban by the NCAA. He decided to forgo his senior season to play in a number of events before turning professional. At the 2015 Australian Masters in November, Dechambeau was runner-up with John Senden and Andrew Evans, two shots behind the winner Peter Senior. He was the low amateur at the Masters in 2016 and tied for 21st place.

Professional career

Immediately after the Masters in mid-April 2016, DeChambeau turned professional and signed a long-term agreement with Cobra-Puma Golf. He made his pro debut days later at the RBC Heritage in South Carolina and tied for fourth, earning over $259,000. The decision to turn professional meant the forfeiture of his exemptions to the U.S. Open at Oakmont and Open Championship at Royal Troon; he qualified his way into the U.S. Open, tied for fifteenth place for over $152,000, and improved his world ranking to 148.

Despite the strong start, DeChambeau did not initially earn enough to qualify for a PGA Tour card, but had enough to earn entry into the Web.com Tour Finals. His first professional win was the DAP Championship which also earned him a PGA Tour Card for the 2017 PGA Tour.

On July 16, 2017, he earned his first PGA Tour victory by winning the John Deere Classic.

Hank Haney views video, says Tiger Woods’ swing one ‘he could win with’

Tiger Woods does not give up much regarding progress he’s making in his rehabilitation from back surgery. He Tweets a pitch here, an iron shot there, and, yesterday, a single driver swing that he dubbed, “Making Progress.”

A full swing with a driver unequivocally represents progress, but can more be read into it? That’s what Golf Channel asked, via Twitter. It put out a call to “swing experts” asking how everything looks.

We’re not sure how many of those who replied are swing experts, but one of them most assuredly is, Woods’ former instructor Hank Haney, who weighed in with this: “That’s a swing he could win with, it’s not across the line and stuck inside coming down, a little stiff looking but it’s good enough.”

We’ll defer to Haney here on the swing itself; he worked with Woods for six years. But the issue is not whether one swing looks adequate, but whether Woods’ back can withstand increased repetitions that will likely include amping up the speed and explosiveness. In other words, will his back eventually allow him to put in the requisite hours at least to become competitive again?

Other replies to Golf Channel’s query, incidentally, ranged from, “looks like he has a great future as a recreational golfer” to “THE GOAT BACK AT IT.”

We’ll see. In the mean time, we’ll eagerly wait for another installment of Tiger: The Comeback.

UPDATE: Woods has been cleared “to resume full golf activity with no restrictions,” Bob Harig of ESPN reported. “He got a nice report and is allowed to proceed,” Woods’ agent Mark Steinberg told Harig. “He can do as much as he needs to do. Tiger is going to take this very, very slowly. This is good, but he plans to do it the right way.”

FedEx Cup 2017: Standings, winners, rules and how golfers win $10 million

The final PGA Tour event of the 2016-17 season is here, and there is a lot of money on the line. Thirty players will play the Tour Championship this weekend at East Lake, and just under $34 million is at stake between the Tour Championship purse and FedEx Cup bonus money.

Jordan Spieth is the favorite to win this week (it would be his second in three years), but he’ll have loads of competition. One of the quirky nuances to the Tour Championship is that the FedEx Cup points players have been earning since last fall get reset this week.

The reason for this is to create a little bit of drama in case one or two players are way out in front. The PGA Tour wants everyone to have a mathematical chance of winning the FedEx Cup if they win the Tour Championship, thus the reset. Their points earned at the Tour Championship are then added to the reset points to determine a FedEx Cup winner.

Here’s how we stand right now.

2017 FedEx Cup Standings

RANKING PLAYER RESET FEDEX CUP POINTS
1 Jordan Spieth 2,000
2 Justin Thomas 1,800
3 Dustin Johnson 1,520
4 Marc Leishman 1,296
5 Jon Rahm 1,280
6 Rickie Fowler 1,120
7 Hideki Matsuyama 960
8 Justin Rose 800
9 Brooks Koepka 640
10 Paul Casey 480
11 Pat Perez 384
12 Matt Kuchar 368
13 Charley Hoffman 352
14 Daniel Berger 336
15 Jason Day 314
16 Webb Simpson 293
17 Jhonattan Vegas 272
18 Kevin Kisner 251
19 Kevin Chappell  231
20 Brian Harman 219
21 Adam Hadwin 206
22 Kyle Stanley 194
23 Patrick Reed 182
24 Tony Finau 170
25 Sergio Garcia 161
26 Xander Schauffele 151
27 Russell Henley 142
28 Gary Woodland 133
29 Patrick Cantlay 124
30 Jason Dufner 115

So you can see the player in 30th (Jason Dufner) has to win the Tour Championship and basically have the field finish in the opposite order of its ranking (i.e. Spieth in 30th, Thomas in 29th, etc.) for him to win the FedEx Cup. Let’s say Dufner won this week. He would finish with 2,115 FedEx Cup points. If Spieth finished even 29th, he would surpass Dufner with 2,118 points.

The margin is thin for players at the bottom. It’s not that they can’t win, it’s just that it’s incredibly unlikely. The top five are guaranteed a FedEx Cup win if they win the Tour Championship. The players just outside of that have a great chance of taking home the $10 million first prize by winning the Tour Championship as well. Take Rickie Fowler, for example. All he has to do to win the FedEx Cup is win the Tour Championship and have Jordan Spieth finish third or worse. Fowler would finish with 3,120 points, and Spieth would finish with 2,760 with a third-place finish.

Over $25 million in bonus prize money is distributed for the FedEx Cup after the dust settles this weekend (and this doesn’t include the $8.8 million purse for the Tour Championship!). All told, $35 million of FedEx Cup money is distributed to players who make the FedEx Cup playoffs. Those who got cut in previous weeks receive a little bit of the $35 million pot, and even those who finished Nos. 125-150 in the standings receiving $32,000 each. Here are distributions for the final 30.

2017 FedEx Cup payouts

PLACE FEDEX CUP PAYOUTS
1st $10 million
2nd $3 million
3rd $2 million
4th $1.5 million
5th $1 million
6th $800,000
7th $700,000
8th $600,000
9th $550,000
10th $500,000
11th $300,000
12th $290,000
13th $280,000
14th $270,000
15th $250,000
16th $245,000
17th $240,000
18th $235,000
19th $230,000
20th $225,000
21st $220,000
22nd $215,000
23rd $210,000
24th $205,000
25th $200,000
26th $195,000
27th $190,000
28th $185,000
29th $180,000
30th $175,000

There is a lot at stake this week at the Tour Championship. The winner of the tournament walks away $11.5 million richer if he also wins the FedEx Cup. Interestingly, eight of the 10 champions of this event (including Rory McIlroy this year) did not make it back to East Lake to defend, and only Tiger Woods has ever won the FedEx Cup twice (something Spieth could accomplish this week).

Past FedEx Cup Champions

  • 2016: Rory McIlroy
  • 2015: Jordan Spieth
  • 2014: Billy Horschel
  • 2013: Henrik Stenson
  • 2012: Brandt Snedeker
  • 2011: Bill Haas
  • 2010: Jim Furyk
  • 2009: Tiger Woods
  • 2008: Vijay Singh
  • 2007: Tiger Woods

We should be in for a tremendous week of golf in Atlanta. All of the playoff events have been strong so far, but throw in the juice of $34 million and you start to ratchet up the intensity from 30 of the best players on the planet.

Derik Dalton wins the Golf Channel Amateur Golf Tour Valley Championship at Dragonfly

Perhaps the real winner of this event was the golf course, as only two players in the 62 player field were able to break 80.  Even though the players did not play the course from all the way back, the 7,640 yard Dragonfly layout played longer than normal after all the recent rain.  Derik Dalton from Jackson, California seemed to hit it just long enough to better the rest of the field in the Championship Flight with a seven over par 79.  The only other player to break 80 was Jeff Lee from Fresno, also with a 79.  The low scorer for the Seniors was Kevin Duffy from Fresno, CA with an 82.
