GOLF Top 100 Teacher: This foolproof shot near the green will help you save more pars

You’re 50 yards from the green. The wind is up. You could play your standard pitch, but good luck if you put too much loft on the shot—the wind could knock the ball down, carry it too far or blow it sideways.

Your best option here is the bump-and-run.

And to make the shot that much easier to pull off, hit it with a hybrid.

The heavy weight of a hybrid allows you to make a smaller, more controlled swing but still generate ample distance to get the ball all the way to the target. The setup is very traditional: Grip down a few inches, narrow your stance and set a tad more weight over your front foot.

All you have to do now is make a simple little swing—just a little longer than what you’d use for a chip shot—with the club almost always staying below hip level. There′s not much that can go wrong. Even if you don′t make solid contact, the ball will typically roll out the correct distance. It′s a very low-maintenance shot and a great option to have in your bag when the trouble is long of the green.

Five non-major golf tournaments grabbing the most interest on 2019 PGA Tour schedule

Source: CBS Sports
By Kyle Porter

Obviously the four most anticipated golf events of 2019 will be the Masters, the U.S. Open, the Open Championship and the PGA Championship — although maybe not in that order. The four majors are the foundation of any golf season, and now with Tiger Woods back in the mix alongside an electrifying crop of golfers with ages ranging 25-35, the anticipation is even higher.

Plus, the course lineup is laugh-out-loud good. Augusta National, Bethpage Black, Pebble Beach and Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. We’re not worthy.

So any list of tournaments we’re looking forward to should start and end with the four majors. I personally think winning majors is both overrated (winning the Players is just as hard) and underrated (what Brooks Koepka is currently doing is preposterous), but those are other columns for other times. Today, I want to talk about five 2019 tournaments that aren’t majors that I’m fired up about as we head into yet another exciting golf calendar year.

1. Players Championship: This is probably No. 1 every single season, but there’s extra fascination this time around as the event heads back to March for the first time since 2006. This may feel weird in the first year, but I think ultimately the rhythm of a Players-Masters-PGA-U.S. Open-Open-FedEx Cup calendar (all in different months!) will be pretty awesome.

2. Genesis Open: Everybody has their “this is the real opening day for golf” event, and I think Riviera is probably it for me. You can keep Pebble Beach and Torrey Pines, and I’ll take Tiger Woods on this jewel of a course with one of the best fields of the first two months. Fully subscribed.

3. Tournament of Champions: No really! There will be ample anticipation after a month-long break. Rory McIlroy will be there. Dustin Johnson and Cameron Champ will be trying to drive balls into the Pacific Ocean. And … if you haven’t seen it yet … it sounds like Tiger Woods might make an appearance for the first time in over a decade. What’s not to be excited about?!

4. Tour Championship: I’m normally worn out by this time of the season, but a few changes here have engendered greater interest. The PGA Tour has implemented a new system in which the leader of the FedEx Cup going into the Tour Championship will start the Tour Championship at 10 under. Really, this is a real thing that’s going to happen!

It could get mega confusing for people who don’t know what’s going on — how did Rory McIlroy shoot 270 to Justin Rose’s 277 and lose by four? — but I think it’s ultimately a good solution to a complex problem, and I’m intrigued to see how it plays out. Also, the winner of the FedEx Cup now gets $15 million instead of $10 million.

5. Wyndham Championship: Wait … the Wyndham Championship?! So maybe it’s not at the best course or in the best spot on the calendar, but the PGA Tour has implemented a new system in which the winner of the regular season FedEx Cup points list gets $2 million. That’s a lot of dough to pass up for somebody who wants to skip this tournament between the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational and the three playoff events but is near the top in the FedEx Cup.

My actual tournament for this spot is probably the Memorial or the Arnold Palmer Invitational, but in Year 1, my interest is piqued for how this change affects the Wyndham.

The Etiquetteist: How many mulligans are too many mulligans?

Source: Golf.com

If you’re a trivia geek, you might know that the term “mulligan” is often said to derive from a Canadian golfer named David Mulligan, who once re-teed his opening shot while playing with his buddies, only to have his pals never let him live it down.

That is only one of many mulligan “origin stories,” but this isn’t Jeopardy!. It’s an etiquette column. So the mulligan-related questions on our mind are these: When and where is it okay to take one? And: Is it okay to take one at all?

Conduct a random survey at your local course, and the answers will be as varied as the swings that you see.

But a general rule abides: In a friendly game, a 1st tee “mully” is permissible, if, and only if, everyone agrees on this beforehand. To shank your opening shot, and then request a mulligan? That’s poor form. In that instance, the pardoning power lies solely with your playing partners, who might take pity on you and offer you a re-do.

In which case, hmm.

While the laws of etiquette allow you to accept their unanimous gesture (and it must be unanimous), the laws of self-esteem dictate something different: Is pity really something you’re eager to receive?

In especially lenient groups, the spirit of generosity at time grows so extreme as to allow for mulligans throughout the round, on holes other than the 1st. But conduct of that nature demeans the game so direly, we hesitate to even bring it up.

“A roving mulligan is just ‘taking the piss,’ as we say in England,’” says Atlanta-based GOLF Top 100 Instructor Jon Tattersall. At that point, you’re not playing, you’re practicing, he says.

Of course, in serious competitions, mulligans are out of the question. Every shot counts, not only by rule of etiquette but also by rule of play.

What’s that you say? Your game isn’t tournament-ready? Join the club. It’s still worth trying to get into a tournament mindset.

“It can be helpful to get into the habit of hitting one shot only off the 1st tee, as it gets your adrenaline going and gives you a good idea of how your technique is doing,” Tattersall says. “Stress is the only real gauge. Anyone can hit a good shot with nothing on the line.”

Admittedly, we’re now straying away from etiquette and toward game-improvement. But we’ll stay here for a moment, because other knowledgeable golfers agree.

“Mulligans, breakfast balls — I just don’t really approve of them,” says veteran Tour pro Brian Henninger, who also works as an instructor and counsels his students to “test yourself by adding up every stroke.”

“There are exceptions if you’re playing some alternative formats agreed upon before you play,” Henninger says. “But there’s nothing worse than playing with ignorant players who don’t abide by, understand or fudge the basic integrity of score.”

In other words: It violates his sense of etiquette. You’ll note Henninger’s mention of “breakfast balls.” A reminder that mulligans go by many names, not all of them owing to David Mulligan. As in this story:

An American golfer, having scuffed his opening tee shot while playing in Scotland, turned to his caddie and inquired: “What do you call a mulligan over here?”

Replied the caddie: “We call it ‘three.’”

2018 Mayakoba Golf Classic tee times, viewer’s guide

The PGA Tour makes its first of two stops south of the border this week for the Mayakoba Golf Classic held at El Camaleon Golf Club in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The event, which began in 2007 as an alternate field event, became a FedEx Cup event offering full points and a Masters invitation to the winner in 2013. It has since produced a number of exciting finishes, including a playoff and a pair of one-stroke victories in the last five years, the most recent coming last year when Patton Kizzire edged out Rickie Fowler by a shot.

Both Kizzire and Fowler return to the field this year alongside a number of notable names including Jordan Spieth, who added the Mexico stop to his schedule to fulfill his minimum starts requirement. Spieth made his 2018-’19 season debut a week ago in Las Vegas and started strong, posting a 66 and a 68 to get into contention heading into the weekend. But he played his final 36 holes in one-over par, finishing in a tie for 55th. He’ll need to put four rounds together this week if he wants to get his season off on the right track, as 17 under or better has been the winning score here in each of the last five seasons.

Another to watch this week will be Cameron Champ, who was in the mix through 54 holes last week at the Shriners, but, like Spieth, struggled on Sunday, carding a two-over 73. He still managed to finish T-28, and once again showed why the hype is very real with some jaw-dropping drives that left him easy wedge shots into many of the greens.

Also in the field in Mexico are Tony Finau, PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Aaron Wise and reigning U.S. Amateur champion Viktor Hovland.

TV Schedule

The Golf Channel will carry live coverage Thursday through Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. ET.

Major changes coming to FedEx Cup Playoffs, including a new scoring system at the Tour Championship

Source: Golf.com
By Josh Berhow

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan met with the media on Tuesday to announce sweeping changes to the FedEx Cup regular season and playoffs, which will begin next year.

Highlighted by a simplified scoring system for the Tour Championship and several millions more in prize money, here’s what you need to know about the changes:

Wyndham Rewards will now sponsor a new $10 million program called the “Wyndham Rewards Top 10.” The Wyndham Championship is the last regular season event on the PGA Tour schedule, and the top 10 players in the FedEx Cup standings through the Wyndham will collect big bonuses. The leader gets $2 million, second takes $1.5 million and the golfer in 10th place receives $500,000.

The FedEx Cup Playoffs will be reduced from four events to three. The top 125 players will compete at the Northern Trust, with 70 advancing to the BMW Championship and 30 to the Tour Championship. While this was more or less an open secret when the new schedule was released, the format for the Tour Championship has been completely overhauled.

The Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta previously used to use a points reset, but starting in 2019 the Tour will use a strokes-based bonus system for all 30 players in the field. The FedEx Cup points leader through the BMW will start the Tour Championship at 10 under, and the other 29 players will be assigned scores according to their standing. The format is below.

1st : -10
2nd: -8
3rd: -7
4th: -6
5th: -5
6th to 10th: -4
11th to 15th: -3
16th to 20th: -2
21st to 25th: -1
26th to 30th: E

If the system was in place for this year, for example, FedEx Cup leader Bryson DeChambeau would begin the Tour Championship at 10 under, while Tiger Woods (who is 20th in the standings), would start at two under and eight off the lead. This new format will crown one champion come Sunday night, as the winner of the Tour Championship will also win the FedEx Cup title (and its massive bonus). This change prevents the awkwardness of honoring two winners — a Tour Championship winner and FedEx Cup winner — when the tournament finishes.

“As soon as the Tour Championship begins, any fan — no matter if they’ve followed the PGA Tour all season or are just tuning in for the final event — can immediately understand what’s going on and what’s at stake for every single player in the field,” Monahan said in a release. “And, of course, players will know exactly where they stand at all times while in play, which will ratchet up the drama, consequence and volatility of the competition down the stretch. Compared to the current system, the beauty here is in the simplicity.”

The FedEx Cup bonus pool also gets a dramatic boost, increasing by $25 million to $60 million. Starting next year, the FedEx Cup winner will take home $15 million, up from $10 million.

Brooks Koepka: Golf’s hot property and the struggle to be famous

Not everyone likes being in the spotlight, even pro golfers!  Check out this article we found on Brooks Koepka, 28-year-old PGA Championship winner.

(CNN)He’s the hottest golfer on the planet, though you might struggle to recognize him.

Brooks Koepka’s second major title of the season at the US PGA was somewhat swamped by the Tiger Woods noise, but the 28-year-old’s low-key approach is also keeping him under the radar.
That could be about to change after Sunday’s success. By holding off a charging Woods at Bellerive and to add to his successful defense of the US Open at Shinnecock Hills in June, the muscular Koepka has propelled himself into the epicenter of the spotlight.
The attention is something he doesn’t necessarily crave, and yet sometimes he feels he deserves more.
During the week of the US PGA, Koepka was in a public gym with his buddy Dustin Johnson, twhere the world No.1 was receiving plenty of attention from other gym goers. Koepka could only laugh as he was largely ignored.
“I like to lay low, I like to hang back. I like to be the person that’s not really recognized. Yet again, you can’t hide when you do certain things,” Koepka told CNN Sport.

‘One of best years ever’

The “things” he has done this season have taken him to second in the world and eclipsed anything done by Johnson, or the resurgent Woods or Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy or any of golf’s recent pin-ups.
And that, despite watching April’s Masters from his couch, feeling low and “getting fat” while recovering from a wrist injury.
Koepka has now won three of the last six majors he’s played in. That’s Woods-esque domination. In St. Louis he became only the fifth player to win the US Open and US PGA in the same year, after Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Woods.
“When you look at those names, growing up as a kid you couldn’t even imagine adding your name to that list,” Koepka said.
“To do that is incredible and to look back where I was four months ago is incredible. I don’t think I could have dreamed of this.”
Nicklaus, the 18-time major champion, was suitably impressed.
He tweeted: “For @BKoepka to not play @TheMasters because of injury, to be unsure of his near future in golf, then come back to win @usopengolf & @PGAChampionship—to return and win 2 of the 3 majors left in the year—you have to believe that is one of the best years any golfer has ever had!”
Koepka also joins Woods, Spieth, Tom Watson and Nicklaus as the only Americans to have won three majors by the age of 28 since World War II. And he joins Spieth and McIlroy as the only multiple major winners in a season for the past decade.
“I can think of plenty of people along the way telling me I’ll be nothing, working at McDonald’s,” Koepka told reporters Tuesday at Bellerive.
“The whole time, you’re just trying to prove them wrong. You’re always trying to prove somebody wrong. Sometimes your haters, I guess, are your biggest motivators.

‘Tough guy to beat’

While Spieth, Thomas or Rickie Fowler manage to engage with the public, Koepka finds it harder to open up.
“I’ve always been, I guess, pretty cool,” said Koepka, who is dating actress and model Jena Sims. “I try to hide things. I don’t like people, I don’t let too many people into my life.
“I’m not the best with words. I’m not going to let everyone in, but when I do open up I trust you. I let you fully in. My close friends, my family and everyone around me can really appreciate it and sometimes it’s not the easiest to open up to people.
“I’m a little bit hesitant to do that and I think that’s what a lot of people see. I’m trying to work on it, I really am.”
Arguably, Koepka didn’t help his public relations cause by once describing golf as “boring” and saying he was not a “golf nerd” and would rather be playing pro baseball.
As a gym nut, he spent Sunday morning of both the US Open and US PGA working out and lifting weights.
At Shinnecock, before teeing off in the final round, his program involved bench pressing 225 pounds 14 times. “I can get to 315,” he says.
But golfer he is, and he has been working with renowned English swing coach Pete Cowen, melding his huge-hitting power game, with a deft touch around the greens and a killer putting stroke.
“He’s a tough guy to beat when he’s hitting it 340 [yards] in the air,” Woods told reporters after finishing two strokes behind at Bellerive. “He didn’t just have the driving, he had the iron game, he had the putting and made some key up-and-downs.”

‘I was a hot head’

Koepka admits he doesn’t show much emotion, but says that’s a deliberate move to counter his youthful temper.
“I’m sure most people think that is very un-entertaining, and very blah on the golf course,” he said.
“It’s just because I’m so focused. You’re not going to see much emotion from me, but I’ve worked on that.
“Maybe 10 years ago when I got to college I was a hot head. I mean, I could snap a club in two seconds and not think anything of it.”
The young Koepka took up golf after a car accident ended his dreams of making it in baseball, basketball and other more athletic sports.
After college at Florida State, he opted against following his contemporaries through the usual route to a professional career in the US and took up membership of Europe’s second-tier Challenge Tour in 2012.
He traveled widely, from Kenya to Kazakhstan, learning his trade, gaining life experiences and growing up.
Four victories secured his European Tour card and a win in Turkey in 2014 propelled him back onto the US PGA Tour where he picked up a first title the following year.
Now, his achievements will likely secure him a spot in golf’s Hall of Fame when he turns 50, but the quiet Koepka doesn’t do it to be famous.
And yet he is often bemused by the lack of attention.
“I use it as motivation,” he says.

Tiger Woods not feeling old at oldest championship in golf

Steve DiMeglio, USA TODAY Published 8:15 a.m. ET July 17, 2018

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland — As a skinny lad back in the day, Tiger Woods got his first taste of links golf at venerable Carnoustie. Not on the course, mind you, but on the practice round.

A student at the time at Stanford University, Woods quickly got an education in how to play the ball under the wind and on the ground of the ancient links. He was an amateur playing in the 1995 Scottish Open, but he was a kid at heart who fell in love with this style of golf on that first day at Carnoustie.

“It was one of the cooler things, just staying on the range and hitting the ball at the 100-meter sign. I was hitting 9-irons and 4-irons and 5-irons and just having a blast trying to hit that sign,” a smiling Woods said Tuesday at Carnoustie ahead of Thursday’s start of the 147th British Open.

“I remember my dad on the range with me saying, ‘Are you ever going to hit the ball past the 100-(meter) sign?’ And I said, ‘No, I’m just enjoying this. Are you kidding me? This is the best,’” Woods said.

It was a two-hour tutorial before he finally headed to the course, and on the second hole used his putter 120 yards from the hole.

“That was one of the cooler moments,” Woods said.

Since then, he’s had some big moments in the Open, winning at St. Andrews in 2000 and 2005 and at Hoylake in 2006. He’s back at Carnoustie for his third Open — he finished in a tie for seventh in 1999 and in a tie for 12th in 2007 — and his inner child has once again emerged.

“I’ve always loved playing links golf,” Woods said. “It’s my favorite type of golf. I enjoy this type of golf because it is creative and you have to use your mind. We’re not going to get the most perfect bounces. A certain shot that is hit where you think is a wonderful shot down the middle of the fairway could bounce some weird way. That’s just part of it.

“That’s the fun challenge of it.”

A warm and dry summer has turned Carnoustie brown and firm, with plenty of fire in the fairways and manageable wispy rough. It just adds to the challenge Woods relishes as he tries to win for the first time since 2013.

Since he first stepped onto the grounds on Sunday, Woods has been putting together the blueprint he’ll use to attack the course. He put a TaylorMade prototype 2-iron bent to 17 degrees in his bag because of the firm conditions. He and caddie Joe LaCava are still working on strategy off each tee, especially when Woods is hitting his 3-iron 335 yards as he did twice on Sunday.

While he’s still figuring out the pace of the greens, which are slightly slower than the normal speeds seen on the PGA Tour, Woods is confident in the mallet putter he first put into his bag in his last start, a tie for fourth in the Quicken Loans National three weeks ago.

“I have putted a little bit better,” Woods said. “To be honest with you, I’ve struggled on slower greens throughout my entire career. It’s one of the reasons why I think I really like the fact that this putter has grooves in it so it does roll initially a little bit faster and a little bit more true. And it is a little bit hotter.”

Woods is making his 12th start of the year and has been in the hunt late on Sunday in five of the tournaments. He said he’s improved from start to start.

“My feels are much better than they were at the beginning of the year, and I feel like I have a better understanding of my game and my body and my swing, much more so than I did at Augusta,” Woods said. “That’s just going to come with a little bit more experience, and I think that I’ve made a few adjustments.

“I’ve changed putters. I’ve tweaked my swing a little bit since the West Coast swing. And everything’s gotten just a little bit better. I’ve put myself up there in contention a couple times.

“Just need to play some cleaner golf, and who knows?”
